What is stress? Stress is made up of strain, tension and pressure that can be caused by many different objects or events. This week in class we talked about stress in the family and just in general, and how to cope with it better. in this weeks reading we learned about a family scholar, who developed the ABCX model. This scholars name was Ruben Hill, he started studying and producing this model to help find different ways to cope with stress, this started around 1949 during war.
Starting with the ABCX model, the A represents the actual event or the stressor event, In this case, the stressor in WW2 was the father of the family would be gone off to war. B is both resources and responses, so basically how you respond to the stress and how you actually cope with the stressor. in present day some ways to "cope" or to respond to a stressor situation would be if the father is no longer a part of the family or is away for work, they mom would have to find a way to make money, so the response to that situation would be finding a job. C stands for cognitions, which is how the family defines the problem, all A B and C interact to get X, the crisis, the total experience.
There isa Ted Talks on youtube that I thought was a better way to understand and to help cope with stress, it called "How to make stress your friend" I'll have a link to it at the bottom of this blog for anyone who is interested! She just talks about how to have a better perspective of stress and how to make it your friend Haha!! I really do suggest that video though!
What are some examples of a stressor event within the family? Well it could be anything ranging from unemployment of a family member, to a death of a loved one within the family.
During class, we talked about a few benefits of having tension or strain, we discussed that it could be a big way of bringing each other together in the family. I have experienced this myself in my family. For those who don't know, Im a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, two out of four of my brothers have served 2 year LDS missions, and my older brother is currently still on his mission in New York! On LDS missions, you can talk to your family once a week through email, and on Christmas and mothers day through Skype. I amsuper close to my brother Ethan, then he decided to go on a 2 year mission! We were all so excited and proud of him for making the decision of talking 2 years out of his life to serve our Heavenly Father and bring the gospel to those who need it! When it came time for him to leave for New York, I wasn't going to have my best friend around for a while. My other older brother Kenzie, is also super close to him too, so when Ethan left it was just me and Kenzie left at home. in this situation it caused a little stress on us (not a huge stressor) but it was definitely a big change for us. But because of this change, it helped me and Kenzie grow closer to each other. our relationship wasn't really there before Ethan left but because he did, me and Kenzie had the opportunity to really grow our relationship and friendship into something that I will always be thankful for! Me and my brothers are all best friends! Im so thankful for the gospel of Jesus Christ and for families! I love my family and I can't wait to spend time and all eternity with them! They are truly my best friends!
